oil pan gasket
 

I'm having trouble replacing my oil pan gasket on my 289. The metal on the block at the front and rear (the crankshaft housing) is a smooth channel. The corresponding metal on the pan has a raised groove. However the rubber gaskets (I bought a four piece Felpro and looked at plenty of others) are exactly the opposite. They have the groove indentation on the crank side and a smooth surface on the pan side. It seems that any way you manipulate the gasket the seal will be crappy. Any suggestions?

I can't speak for the groove on the crank side but all the gaskets I have changed are smooth on the pan side. This smooth surface will contact the raised portion of your pan and provide a good contact seal with not much torque.
The groove on the upper side might be there to get by a pin that used to stick out in that groove to keep it from spining http://216.59.112.100/interactive/msgboard/confused.gif Either way you bought the best gaskets made Fel-Pro.
