Ok I think I found some good replacement Heads (maybe)
I have been reading every bit of info I can find on heads the last couple days and from what I can tell these (Iron GT40P Heads) would be a great direct bolt on for under $500 the only thing I cant figure out is if they will work with my headers. Does anyone know where I can get this kind of info? I have Ford Motorsport headers my local mustang shop called them "longtube" headers. Any Info Please?

GT40P heads would for sure have to have special headers. I think they work pretty wellb but the header problem is their main draw back.

Ahhhh forget it. I purchased some coolant/block sealer and that's the end of it. The car performs perfectly the way it is I just can justify the $1000 expense for marginal performance gains to fix a problem that hasn't even become a problem yet. I have a ganno filter and plan to flush my radiator tomorrow in order to remove as much of the sealer as I can. I hope that Barrs actually does what it says it does "permanently seals cracks in iron heads" We Shall See!!!

Sunshine, I'm still wondering why those 351W heads did not go on? Do you have the casting #'s that were on those heads? Something was wrong there. Yours is a 289 block, correct?

The real problem with the 351W heads is the "Expert" who was giving me guidance didn't know what he was talking about. In actuality I did not install the heads instead I purchased them delivered them to the local shop then left in frusteration when I was told they were to wide. Complicationg matters my car has the wrong motor mounts on it (from newer mustang) and my motor sits a tad higher in the engine compartment which makes things tight for my headers. I later confronted him and after looking through a couple books he had to admitt he realy didn't know what he was talking about. Thats not to say its as easy as you all made it out to be. Head bolts are differen't modifications need to be made to the gaskets and some boss thinging needs to be removed from the 351W head also only 69 to 74 351W heads will work (all vital information that is not easy to come by). In the end I got tired of everyone trying to sell me World Heads (windsor jr.) They insist "its a direct bolt on at $750" IT IS NOT!!! my stock rockers won't work with the windsor jr. meening you have to purchase a set of $180 rollers (cheaest I could find). Stock pushrods won't work you need hardend push rods costing another $90 and of course the stock valve covers won't work with the taller rockers so there goes another $90. That brings me up to $1110 + $550 installation. I tried every angle and it always added up the same. Even 351W heads after a valve job minor porting and installation were just to much. If I am going to spend $1500 on an $800 motor I might as well spend $4500 on a fresh 347 stroker motor which will push 400hp.
Sorry about the misleading information. |

Sorry to hear of your problems. But you have a valuable lesson here for everyone, just because the new goodie you want costs $50.00 (random number), don't think that is the end of the cost. Direct bolt on is seldom direct. And always keep your end target in mind. Hope it works out for you. |

Black: The GT-40p's are a good head, but if you don't want to hassle with the headers just get a set of GT-40 irons. They are a direct bolt on, and you should be able to find a set for about $400. Or even better, find a bare set for around $300, clean them up a little and put on the valve train that works for you. The whole package should still be under $500. That's what I did. The GT-40 and GT-40p heads are the same performance wise.
