overheating
 

I bought my wife a 1965 mustang and the 289 motor in it overheats. It was supposed to be a motor with 15,000 miles on the rebuild. The car runs good and idles good but then overheats while driving. I replaced the radiator and put an additional elec fan on the front of the radiator to add additional cooling power. still no luck. any ideas? the oil doesnt have water in it so I think the head gaskets are ok. the timing is also ok. any suggestions to check out would be great.

Well with a new radiator, fan, and most importantly, correct timing, there's only one thing I can really think of...
Water pump? Maybe old and worn? Maybe there's a clog in the system somewhere? You may want to look at your thermostat as well. Good luck.

actually replace both of those items as well............going to flush the block.

Radiator?
 

Is the radiator a 2 row,3 row, or 4 row? I had to go to a 4 row radiator, Edelbrock water pump, Shelby open front valance, auxillary 16" electric pusher fan , and a 16" flex fan to get mine cool (200 F) in 95-105 F ambiant temperatures.

This is experimenting over several years and with a highly modified, but relatively tame street engine. I wouldn't waste my money on "water wetter", "40 below", and similar products. Can't say they don't have some short term effect from one tep to the other, but longer periods just don't show an appreciable result.

I might add that after my origial build, The new radiator was 50% occluded within 20,000 miles, frorm crapolla left in the block when originally built by a reputable machine shop. I did have the (new) radiator disassembled and rodded out the disocclude the passages. It worked out wellb I recommend putting a filter inbween the themost and the radiator. That's what I'm gonna do next ime around.

i have a 65 with a 289 in it. It gets up to about 220 degrees if i get caught in traffic but runs cool when I am moving. Is this to hot?
