Painting 10-hole wheel : Please help.
Hi,
Ok, I'm low on cash, and am up to no good, so I figured I'd add some life to my crappy 10-hole wheels by painting them black (it would compliment my blackouts, and tinted windows). No, this isn't rice! What I want to know is can I just sand it down with some 220 grit paper, prime it (several coats) and then paint it (several coats)? Or should I be going through some other process (most likely done by a professinoal)? Bye! ------------------ Gautam N. Lad http://www.cubicdesign.com http://www.cubicdesign.com/mustang/ |

Those 10-holes are clear coated. You'll need to get some aircraft stripper (Pep Boys, Auto Zone paint/body section) to strip the clear coat. Then you can sand and paint. The auto stores also sell wheel paint, but I don't think that stuff will work on aluminum. In fact, I'm not sure what kind of paint WILL work on aluminum wheels. Maybe somebody else can advise you. Most folks I know of get them powdercoated (expensive), instead of painting.
I've seen black 10-holes, and they look sharp! Good luck. ------------------ "Back in the day" owned a '66 289 and later a black '68 289. Current - '00 white GT w/K&N and Flowmasters. Otherwise bone stock. ET-13.952@98.87 RT-.507 60'-2.09 Son #1 - '87 GT stock Son #2 - '89 LX 5.0 stock |

I friend in high school had a 86 gt and he had the 10 holes painted white to match his car. It looked good. He took it to a body shop and had it done, I don't know what was done for prep though.

Hi,
If I do the process of: - Stripping clearcoat using aircraft stripper - Sanding using 180 grit - Priming 2-5 coats - Painting 2-5 coats My question is, how long would I wait between the coats of the primer. And, after the last coat of primer has fully been applied, how long should I wait before applying the paint. And finally, after the last coat of paint is applied, how long should the car be left to dry? I dunno if I can handle more then a week without driving the car. Thanks! LOL!
good stuff dinomite! My friend just bought a 2WD 2000 GMC Sierra stepside and we went to a local parts store to get a bug gaurd and the sales kid was saying stuff like, "Yo, man, you gonna put twuns on that!" (referring to 20" wheels) "Dats a phat ride Yo!" I just had to laugh, i can't believe people talk like that, especially a suburban white boy with spiky hair and a sun visor worn upside down and sideways. To each his own i guess ------------------ '84 Mustang 5.0 LX My car |
