My buddy picked up a limited slip pumpkin for his 68. It was an 8" rear end and the swap took about an hour. The only things we needed were a new gasket and new gear oil.

You can get a new "chunk" or "pumpkin" for your 8 inch rear with posi [trac loc]. There are several for sale around on the internet. I bought one around a year ago. I also see them all the time on the various mustang/cougar sites.

I'll try and find the name of the guy I bought mine from.

I put an Auburn Pro in my 8". It's much better than the Traction-Lock unit that I used to have. Are you happy with the gear ratio that you have now? You do need different bearings to install that unit. I bought the Auburn Pro new off the net for $389 and got the bearings locally for $35. I did install the unit into the 3rd member myself. You could pay to have that done, taking the 3rd member out and reinstalling yourself. Cost to me was about $425 for the Auburn Pro and bearings doing all the labor myself. That was a couple of years ago, might be more now.

step up to a 9" rear and never worry about breaking it

It's true that the 9" is much stronger than the 8". It's also heavier (unsprung weight as well) and it does take more of the engines power to turn it.

ha thats when you upgrade to 4.10 gears actually a 3.89 sounds about right

its true though about the weight ...i upgraded to a 9 inch and i had to upgrade to 5 leafer leaf springs cause the old ones kind of twisted under the trq + weight of the rear end winding up. i even had traction masters welded in and i still had a problem with hop

I had never messed with a 3rd member either. The Auburn Pro had pretty good instructions with it. I did have to take the carrier into a shop to get the new bearings pressed on. They gave me a few tips on how to adjust the pre load for those bearings and the lash. Over all, not too hard but you do need to get that (preload and lash) right to have a good result.

You will need a dial indicater with a magnetic base. I also had to make a tool to turn the spanner nuts that adjust the preload and lash.
