289 power
I've got a P.O.S. 289 that I've lifted and have to replace intake manifold, carb, heads, cam, lifters, to the point that i just about have a 289 base block and i want to build off of it. I'm also bad at guessing. So does anyone know the best combination of parts to produce peak hp out of my engine?

There are an infinite number of ways to get more hp out of a 289 engine. Knowing this, there are several questions that come in to play... how much are you willing to spend? How many hp do you actually want? Will the car see track time? Do you want the car to be streetable? etc.
Give us some idea of what you have envisioned for the performance of the car and we will be better able to make specific suggestions. |
As stated before....
HP=$$$ Just how much you want to spend. Also, as the modifications go up in the engine the reliability goes down. Let us know what you're trying to do. |
i'm not talking about major mods such as a victor jr. and 850cfm carb, i'm looking for owner proven combinations, which carb manifold and cam combination is best working together. I'm only looking at spending a good bit less than 900 for these. Also, in a 67 289 what's the best (for the money) transmission to get? I'm looking into getting a five speed (it has the c-4 right now, but maybe 2 gears actually work on it)Thanks for any help

I had to do the same thing that you do, i have a 67 289 and i decided to go all edelbrock for my engine. I went with the 600 cfm edelbrock carb, performer RPM airgap intake, and edelbrock cam. All 3 cost me about $600 from summitracing.com and i've been very happy with the results. I also would like to know what is the best transmission for a 67 289 with these mods because that is the next thing that i will be replacing for my car. hope this helps.

that did help a lot, thanks, i am also looking into a t-5, tremec or another manual transmission or aod if i have to, i need to know the best one for the 67 289, the problem is i have to mount it on a 65 body, will this matter, should it fit the same?

www.edelbrock.com and look at the variety of power packages they have. They have spent all the bucks trying to figure out which combinations work best.
