air conditioning.... Keep or Lose?

i have the factory air conditioning unit in my mustang, but the a/c compressor is broken. I dont know whats faulty about it, i just know it doesnt work at all. How much would it be to fix or replace it? I dont even like a/c very much, and would it be really difficult to un-equip my car of the a/c? I would prefer not having the a/c compressor in there at all, i dont mind not having a/c. i just dont know how to go about getting rid of it. I have to remove the compressor and vent, and also the radiator to do a cam-shaft swap/intake/4 barrel carb mod anyways. Thanks for your help.

This is a personal decision but I would not remove this option, you can always just disable it by not running a belt. Being from Texas this is an option that alot of people want.

well if its not going to be working or im not using it..... i dont want it in my engine bay... the thing is ugly and makes it hard to work on the engine... i just would like to know how to remove the hoses (worry about pressure?) and what to do with parts on the firewall, if anybody knows... thanks

If you just want to remove it, break the low pressure line loose at the compressor and it will discharge the freon (don't inhale this stuff and yes this is not enviromentally correct). Then disconnect and take the parts off the car all the way to the firewall. You can't really do this wrong.

how do i know which line is the low pressure line? and will there be alot of pressure released when i unscrew every line? thanks

isnt there a nozzle similar to the one on a tire? where you unscrew the cap and press the pin inside and it releases the pressure?

maybe, but much bigger... plus thereare always two hoses next to eachother to the a/c.... i dont know which one is wich... plus i dont wanna open it and find alot of pressure spray screwing everything up .... then i have the a/c vent infront of the radiator and what looks like a little catch can next to it... seems simple but i dont wanna mess anything up... i can make some money off of it haha...

im half way through taking everything out... i have all the hoses out, and some brackets and alot of bolts (all being kept, im not losing anything) out, but i have a few more bolts to remove to get the main brackets off... one, my friend and i both together arent strong enough to get unscrewed , and the other two are being blocked by the water pump pully.... which means i may have to remove the fan, and pully, and shroud........talk about a/c being a *****...... cant wait till its out....

Metal396 07-16-2002 07:53 PM

ALL DONE! my friend and i finished taking everything off....plugged the hoses at the firewall, took off the brakets by removing the shroud, fan and water pump pully (finding that my fan was about to break and destroy my radiator) i got a new fan, and finished taking everything off of the brackets. everything is working great. still need to take out the a/c vent, but all the hard stuff is done! thanks for the help guys. :D
