351C Timing

Does anyone know what the total timing should be on a 73, 351c
with two barrel heads.

35-38

I'm expecting you'll want 35-38 total all in by 3000 rpm. That's really just a guess though. Try that and see if you get any pinging or knock and good performance. If you do get pinging or knock, retard it a little until it doesn't do it and then maybe a little less.

When I ran 351W heads on my 306, I ran a whopping 45 degrees total because that's how it ran best with those relatively inefficient heads. With my more efficient TFTW heads, I run 38 toatal and 15 initial advance. I determined that at the drag strip. I advanced until I didn't get anymore performance improvement and with out detonation and then set it there.

What should i do about my 351c , sometimes it preignites when shutting off. its annoying as hell, and by tuning my timing (i dont know how yet) will i get alittle bit of performance gain? Thanks.

called Dieseling. Not only will timming have an affect, but also the octane in your gas. U might want to use at least 89 octane, but try 92(91?)

yeah i think i will start using 89 octane more often. But ive also been told i just need to retard my timing alittle bit. And how do you tune the timing for better performance? anyone know? Thanks.

P.S.: ive heard of people tuning the carburator jets for better performance also, any ideas on that one?

I usally time my car to 12 deg, u have to have a timming light, then u make sure your distrubitor vaccuum advance is disconnected. To time it from there, just turn the distrubitor till u reach about 12.
