289 Rebuild
 

I'm not sure how often the odometer on my '67 has turned over but I suspect it has a couple of circuits on it. In any event, I have been nursing it through the last few years and am now ready to spend some bucks on it. A friend told me to not bother getting it rebuilt - he said to get a "crate engine" from Ford. I was not aware that Ford was still making them. I would like to avoid making a costly mistake and would appreciate input as to the advantages/disadvantages of rebuilding my current engine as opposed to buying a "crate engine". Any suggestions? E.

As far as I know I don't believe you can get a crate motor in a 289. You can get them in 302, 351, and some others. But someone correct me if I am wrong.

About rebuilding your 289, it would be just fine to have your 289 rebuilt. Your car might be on more down time because you would have to pull your motor and wait for a machine shop to clean it up.

You could buy a 302 crate motor, it would fit just fine, and then you would have less down time on your car.

There are so many different ways to go about it, it just all depends on how much money you want to spend and how long you can live with out driving your stang.

351 or 392
 

The 351W or the 392W (stroked 351W) will fit too. The 392 developes about 430 hp and would give lots of grunt.

on the posative side the crate motors have a worranty depending on the motor. so you have to worry about less in that sense.

if you rebuild your 289 you will have the ability to customize the rebuild for your use in the stang. if you want performance or stock setup?

It all comes down to how stock you want to keep your Stang. If all the numbers match, and it's a Hi-Po, you'd want to keep the motor. If you're not worried about itand you've got the $$$ go with the Windsor. It's got more bang for the buck.

I have Ford Racing Performance Products crate 302 in my '65 fastback. There are a number of decisions to make regarding this engine swap...for it is a swap and not a direct bolt-in. It does come out nice once its in and running.
