Clutch Decision for T-5
Hey guys,
I recently acquired a T-5 transmission for my '65 coupe w/289 v8, and I have a friend who can have a clutch made to my specs for very cheap. I'd like to know what you're experiences are with this swap and the clutch that you all have used. Centerforce, Ford Stock?, Hayes, or any other brand for that matter. Essentially what is it that you liked about the clutch that you are using (used) and how does it fell when pressing the clutch pedal (easy or hard). I am going to go with a clutch cable setup, so what do you all recommend. When all is said and done, I will have a rebuilt 289 built for low- and mid- range power, so the clutch should be able to take some 275+ ft lb of torque! What do you all think? Thanks!:D |
I went with the Centerforce on my 65 Coupe and a Lakewood scattershield. I liked the way the clutch applied more pressure as the RPM's came up. Nice feeling pedal.

I had a friend who ate up a centerforce clutch rather quickly. But then he was running a Big Block with alot of torque. He is also a very hard driver. He beats on his cars. That is the only time I ever heard of Center forces being bad. And with your combo a 289 in a light 65 you should have no problem. And no "Clutchitis"

Since you've decided to use the late bell housing and cable clutch, the obvious answer is a Ford Racing or Centerforce clutch and pressure plate. The only thing special about this installation is to change the overcenter spring on the top of the clutch pedal. More often than not it causes problems when using diaphragm style clutches. I would replace the spring with a lower rate spring, perhaps 1/4 as strong. Leaving a spring on the pedal will ensure the pedal comes full up to the bumper and takes tension off the cable/throwout bearing.
