Starter Rebuild

My starter has been acting up for a while. It has been whinning and normally when I pop the clutch the motor will finally turn over. I think it has finally given out but i cant find the durn thing anywhere. If anyone can tell me where it is that would be great. I'd also like to know how to get it out after I have found it.

Starter is located on passenger side tucked up under exhaust header. Access is from the bottom of the car. It is an easy job and can normally be done with car on jackstands. Some aftermarket headers obscure the starter and sometimes its easiest to loosen the header before attempting to r&r the starter. The important thing when changing one is to not exchange the old one before you have the replacement in your hand. Verify the nose length and number of teeth on the starter gear. Also check the ring gear for chipped teeth as this can sometimes indicate the old starter is the incorrect one.

Starter whine is caused by the Bendix gear not engaging the flywheel/flexplate ring gear. Try to find out if its the starter thats faulty or the ring gear thats faulty.

jeff gave great advice, Just replace the starter instead of rebuilding. I don't know of anyone that would rebuild one though. Get one from Shucks, Kragens, or someother part store that has a lifetime gaurantee and you will learn to love it. i have to replace mine about every 4 years, its great just getting a free newly rebuilt one, i do the same with my alternators. Good luck!
