Carburator Settings
I have a 65 289 with a 2 barrel. Having trouble getting it to idle correctly without reving too high. I only see two areas that I can mess with, the idle screw and the two idle mixture screws. Does anyone have any ideas?

check your spark plugs and wires first. you may not be running on all 8 cylinders. then check the idle screws. also might want to clean up the carb and make shure the jets arent clogged.

Vacuum leak?
A vacuum leak will cause a poor idle as well. Check for that tool.

I suggest getting a vacuum guage and hood it into a non-ported vacuum sorce on the carb or the intake manifold. Use the mixture screws to get highest vacuum and use the idle screw for the rpm you want. Adjust these against each other until you are happy. Then if you still have a bad idle, along with the problems listed above, maybe the carb needs a through cleaning or maybe the power valve is out? What kind of shape is the distributor it? These are the things I would look at.
