parting transmission from engine
hello every one.
first I want to thank the people that have helped me with the engine questions I have asked. I have figured it out to be A 260 instead of A 289. but I have one more question. I need to seperate the transmission from the engine. I am preaty shure I have all bolts taken out becouse it seperated alitle. but is not comming all the way out. does any one know why. the only thing I can think of is that it needs to be in A different gear but then again I have no idea. thanks ford kid |

well, it'd probably be best to unbolt the flywheel from the torque converter before you try and seperate the engine and tranny. you can access the bolts from the lower opening in the bell housing (right in front of the oil pan). Once you have that taken care of, along with the removal of the starter,and all of the bell housing bolts it should be a piece of cake. Good luck!

I am preaty sure it is A 3 speed automatic.(for sure an automatic)
well the starter is allready off how ever the flywheel is still bolted to the torque converter. so I will try that. thanks ford kid |
cool, thats what I have. You might be able to remove two bolts at a time, each time you'll have to turn the engine by hand with a breaker bar. It's really simple, bolting it back up is the hard part.

hey thanks for telling me that I will have to turn the engine with A breaker bar. I pobly would have undone the bolts I saw and wounderd why it wasn't comming out. well I am trying to make an engine stand to get it up in the air alitle bit. hopfully I will have it done tomarrow. then I can try taking the trans off. Iwill keep you all posted.
matt1190- when you say thats what you have you mean you have A 260 with A 3 speed automatic. if so how do you like it. and do you have any performance up grades on it. just woundering cuz I have never been in A mustang with A 260. I am woundering how close it will feel to A 289. and if there are any peformance items out there for them. thanks ford kid |
no, my coupe had an original 289 with a c4. Now has a 351w

So did you get it apart? I've been off-line for a couple of days with DSL problems. I was thinking similar to Matt that it must be the converter to flex plate studs that were holding it.

I can relate to that. DSL is great when it works but when it doesn't it is frustrating.
no I haven't gotten it apart yet. I started to get the bolts out and went to turn the engine with the breaker bar and it turned alitle bit but then the bolt came loose. does any one know why. or have any other ways of turning the engine. thanks ford kid |
well your probably turnin it the wrong way. even though you did turn it counterclockwise, it shouldn't have been that hard to turn the engine to the point where the main bolt loosens:confused: Either it wasnt tightened properly or something is causing it to bind somewhere. Im able to turn mine both ways without loosening the bolt for the balancer, it's that tight. Hmmmm,...well, torque it back down to specs and you shouldnt have a problem. Just turn the engine in a clockwise direction.

ok I will try torqueing it down to specs and turning it again. I just didn't want to put the bolt back in and mess something up.

It shouldn't be hard to turn unless the engine is seized. If it still is difficult to turn, squirt some light oil down the spark plug holes and let it soak for awhile and then try again.

well I finally got it seperated. thanks to all who have helped me. yea at first once I torqued the bolt back down it was alitle hard but it got easier real quick. so then I was able to loosen all the bolts on the flywheel and it came right out.
