No power. 65 Stang with 289

Hello everyone!

I have recently got my 65 Mustang running but it is acting strange. If I gun it, the motor sounds like it is under power and stays that way. It never accels. Just bogs and this is sitting in neutral.
Now if I back the throttle off it "wakes up" and takes off.
The effect this has on the road is I cant seem to get going faster then about 35-40 Mph. My stang has a C4 auto trans till I find a proper 3 speed Manual.

Things that I have done so far.
full tune up including Plugs,Cap, rotor and Points.
I have also rebuilt the carb. The carb is a 2 Bbl Motorcraft.

The problem was really bad and cleared up some when I rebuilt the carb, but is still very very noticable.

Any help and suggestions would be great!
Thanks,

~Ryan

where's your timing set at? How do your spark plugs look after a good, long jab? If you're blaming it on the carb it could be a vac. leak or that its too rich or possibly too lean (does it backfire at all?)

Accelerator pump?

Sounds a little like the accelerator pump in the carb may not be functional. Do you get a good long sqirt out of the nozzles when you open the butterflys with out the engine running?

Yea I am getting fuel when I pull the acell linkage and am looking down the carb.

It does backfire sometimes when I let off the throttle.
Once in a while I also hear it burp up the carb when I gun it.

I'll re-check timing again, though I have been over that a few times.

Sounds like you may just be running too rich.

Check your Vacum advance also.

Well it turns out it was the timing. I have corrected it and it runs like a champ now. Doing that also fixed the overheating problem I was having. 2 birds with one stone!
Thanks for the suggestions guys !
