65 Clutch - Z Bar Issues ? !!

65 clutch issues ?!

I have a 65 coupe with a 69 built 302. It was C-4 equipped and is in the process of being converted to a toploader. I have '66 pedals, z-bar, '66 bell housing, 67 Fairlane 390 toploader with correct Hurst pieces to complete a competition plus 4 shifter.

My problem seems to be the z-bar. It appears to be too wide to fit between the ball stud mounted to the block, and the frame side bracket. Most parts are new or reproduction, and have been authenticated by stamping or casting numbers, and photo ID where possible. The z-bar came with the pedal assembly purchased off e-bay, and looks like the correct year -description based on CJ Pony Parts Inc. Catalog, pg 52, PN# CBE2.

Is the ball stud boss location, different on a '69 block, making it necessary to use the '69 z-bar instead of the '66 ?

I sure would appreciate any help or information anyone may have. It is all that is keeping me from finishing this project.

Thanks!!

Call up CJs...

They don't list a part for the 65... probably because that was not standard equipment... You may have to do some sort of conversion. My guess is that you would need part #CEB5 from their catalog, but I'm not sure. Check with them, they should know.

BTW... they list no part for a 1966 big block... only 67-70.

Wait!!!

That is your problem, I'm looking at the one that you have and it is only for small blocks... you will probably need CEB5... but check with them.

Here's the page to CJ's parts... type in " clutch equalizer bar " in the search and it will send you to where you want to go.

Thanks for your reply. Only the trans is from a big block donor. It has been rebuilt in our shop with the correct small block input shaft to make it durable for use with the 302, " Long input guide, vs the short version used on a 67 390". My z-bar is original equipment from a 66 standard 289 car.

But you have a big block... so the distance between the engine and the frame rail should be shorter simply due to the width of the block...

Please re-read first post. I have a 65 coupe, with a built 302. Small block, NOT a big block.

Oops...

Sorry about that.

CEBBF1 seems to be the frame side mounting part for all of those years. That is a slotted part that allows for adjustment, inward and outward. Is that part off of the car? I found it easiest to put that part into the E-bar before mounting that bar on the engine. Otherwise the bar will be too wide...

BTW... the correct part for a 65 small block is CEB1, CEB2 is a 66 model, as you noted, but it appears as though the upper rod is shorter on the 66 than the 65...

Problem solved !! The part I purchased on E-bay advertised as a Z-bar for a 289 euipped 66, turned out to be a Z-bar for a 250 cid 6 cylinder, " measures @ 3 inches wider than the V-8 unit, but looks the same other wise. Thanks to Jesse at Branda Cobra for figuring this one out!
