Point Gap Setting 72 Mustang 6 cylinder
 

I am trying to set the points on a 1972 Mustang with the straight 6 engine. I was told that the setting was .018 which seems really short. I was going to use the old match book setting but would like to know what the correct setting is anyway. Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction.

I looked it up in my trusty old Chilton's manual. It says .027". BTW, welcome to MW. You'll find a wealth of help and info here.

Thanks for the reply. I will try that. .018 seemed really tight to me but I couldn't find my shop manuals. Thanks for your help.

.018" is for the V-8's, .027" is for the 6.

I noticed the specs of the 1/4 mile on your reply. For comparison, the 72 with the straight 6 runs somewhere around a 46:50 and a top speed of 36 MPH. lmao

I also have a 72 with a 250... Always said, 0 - 60 in two weeks... but cruises at 80 like a dream.

BTW... while the point gap will always get you real close, be sure to check the dwell...
