72 Dash Recap... any dye job recommendations?
I just won a dash "recap" for my 72 off of ebay... I wasn't too sure about using the product until I read the article http://www.moparmusclemagazine.com/howto/5139/ that was attached to the sale from the seller. The seller had a very positive rating and was a "Power Seller"...
First I wanted to ask if anyone had tried these before and had any tips... Second, it only comes in black, and my interior color is ginger. Therefore, it looks as though a dye job is in order... I'm a bit apprehensive about turning something from black to ginger, any tips on that? Dye it before or after I glue it on the dash? My guess would be before... I recently pulled the dash, so everything will be done off of the car... Any tips or tricks would be appreciated... |
Re: 72 Dash Recap... any dye job recommendations?
Finished it up today... for the purests out there, go with the replacement dash. But for those "everyday drivers" and non-show cars, I found this to be an economical and viable alternative.
Total costs were about $70 after shipping and the purchase of the dye. http://img462.imageshack.us/img462/5...uild0044mc.jpg Here was my starting point... Poor thing, this thing was perfect when I got the car in 1997... http://img462.imageshack.us/img462/6...uild0122pu.jpg I sanded down the high spots, and filled them with silicon and made sure that every thing was smooth... http://img462.imageshack.us/img462/3875/dsc001185ss.jpg Following the directions, I siliconed the cover on the dash after cleaning it with ammonia. It was recommended to use bunge cords and weights, but I found that numerous extension cords wrapped tightly around the dash provided a good alternative. I had about 100 feet of cord wrapped around this... http://img462.imageshack.us/img462/322/dsc001238uy.jpg The Ginger color was a bit hard to find... but I did find it (actually "camel") and it looks like a good match. I hope this can be of help to someone... :) |

I was just wondering if '72 dash pads are even available as re-pops? Isn't there an outfit called "Just Dashes" or somethig like that? What do they charge for a refurbishment?
BTW, your dye job looks great. Rev |

I've heard of them... but never used them.
Here's their website if you are interested... http://justdashes.com/Index.htm |

For the '66, I just bought a re-pop from John's Mustang. That was a few years ago and I think it was $160. Fit was only so-so and a few adjustments were necessary. Mine's a weekend driver (no car shows) so all was well. Probably a lot easier to get a '66 than a '72.
