engine balance
I have a 1966 mustang coupe car.I've put a '79 302 in it with a '89 5-speed. I can't seem to get the balance on the engine right. i can balance the motor itself but cannot get flywheels to work with the transmission. If anyone has any ideas please help me thanks.

Re: engine balance
Is the flywheel the one that came on the engine or with the car before you did the swap? You'll have to use the one that came with engine (50oz balance). And should have had it balanced with the rest of the engine at a shop.

Re: engine balance
I'm pretty sure that the 50oz. weights didn't start until the "5.0" came along in 81... It should still take a 28oz. weight on the flexplate/flywheel...
As long as the transmission input shaft fits the clutch disc, I'd match everything up with that engine.... You also have to make sure that the bellhousing is the right one for the flexplate/flywheel... |
Re: engine balance
thanks for the info, but the mototr was a 28 oz. weight but i can't find a flywheel with a 157 tooth pattern that has that weight. Only a 157 tooth will fit inside the bellhousing for cheap. Any suggestions?

Re: engine balance
Cheap?
Depends on your definition of cheap... Check your local parts stores and you *MIGHT* be able to pick one up for $100 or so. I've never really priced them other than doing a quick search... Jegs has them for over $300 for a good one... Be careful about going "cheap" though... Even if you pick up a used one from a salvage yard, you'll still need to spend the $40 or so to have it machined. If you buy it online from somewhere, you may be hit with a pretty stiff shipping charge... You'll have to shop around... CJs has them for $230 ... http://www.parts123.com/PartFrame.as...=CJ_Pony_Parts but I'm sure you can find it cheaper at an Advanced Auto Parts or Autozone... |
Re: engine balance
I bought a flywheel for my engine, the same situation as yours for about $230 from mustangsplus i believe. It is set up to accept pretty much any clutch, so its a pretty good deal.
