1965 clutch chatter
I have a 1965 musstang 2+2. 289 4 speed. The car was originally a rental car from San Fancisco Cal. My problem is that when I Let the clutch out, I encounter chatter throughout the drive train. I had the flywheel resurfaced and installed a new HD clutch and pressur plate. I didn't install a new pilot bearing . I'm thinking now that the clutch may not be in perfect allignment, or the pilot shaft bearing in the flywheel or transmission may me worn out. I would appreciate any input.---Thanks

Re: 1965 clutch chatter
Pilot bearing most certainly could cause it. Also, do you have the dowel pins in the back of the engine that align the bellhousing?? If they are missing that too can cause it.
When you installed the clutch did you make sure everything was clean and grease free?? Lastly, when installing transmission you didn't force anything, like using the transmission bolts to "pull" the transmission in. You didn't hang the transmission on the clutch without having it bolted in. |
Re: 1965 clutch chatter
The dowel pins are present, the trans was installed on the engine outside of the car, so the bell housing alignment is good. all pts were de-greased before installation, and nothing was forced. I have further inspected pilot shaft bearing (in flywheel) and it looks fairly beat up. The pilot shaft on the trans also seems to have a lot of side play in it. ( a friend told me this is normal?) I think this is going to be a good place to start. I will change out these bearings and then go from there. Thanks

Re: 1965 clutch chatter
There are a couple grease spots... My memory is failing me at the moment on where they are, but I remember seeing it in my manual when I was reinstalling my tranny...
