66 289 rear end oil

G'day,

Need a quick reply as I away from all my tech books. I have a stock 1966 289 auto. What is the capacity of the rear diff and what oil types do you guys use? It is going to the sandblasters today and I have it drained and want to fill er up before it gets nice and clean.

PS My family and I are going to US in summer 09. I have an aunt in Huntington Beach LA. My 10 year old son and I want to suck up as much cali car culture as we can while we are there. (My wife and daugther will just do shops, the boys have a leave pass on this) So I am after info on car cruises, car nights, older wrecking yards, retro diners and just like to meet some poeple in the car fraternity while we are there. We aim to go to the Pamona swap and maybe buy a car (dont know what yet) my son is a Lincoln nut. Needles to say Lincolns are rare in Oz. To give you a an idea, the two of us listen to Jan & Dean music while working on the mustang. We plan to drive to Vegas (maybe rent a newish pony) and maybe get a plane to Phili where I have a friend. So any info or contacts would be great.
Hope there is some oil left by the time we get there otherwise I have an extensive heavy paper weight collection.

I would just go to the parts store and pick up some gear lube. Unfortunately I cant remember off the top of my head how much fluid they need, it was quite awhile ago when I filled mine! I can check my chiltons guide out, but that wont be untill saturday afternoon. If I recall correctly you just fill it up with it in the car until you cant put anymore fluid in. The fill hole is a little under half way up the pumpkin. When I had my rearend sand blasted (That always sounds weird) I dont think I had filled it up yet. If you wanted the best would be to get it sandblasted then take it apart and make sure that no sand made its way inside. Good luck!

Around two quarts [four pints] should be about right.
