carb sticks wide open on '67 289 2V
 

Just bought a '67 2+2 with 289 2V. When the accelerator is pushed to the floor, it sticks wide open! When I manually open the the throttle, it gets to a certain point and then "snaps" to wide open and stays there.
I have to pull the linkage back. In the car, the only thing to do is shut of the ignition. It restarts ok.
Is this a return spring problem? There is a spring from the 90 degree bend in the linkage to the carb. There is another spring (like a clock spring) on the throttle shaft. I guess I'm lucky is a stick shift...gets kinda freaky when you push in the clutch and the engine red-lines.

First thing to do is remove the linkage from the carb. Then determine if it is the carb or the linkage that is sticking, this will lead you to a more obvious course of action. Good luck.

It sounds to me like your return spring is connected to the wrong place. The spring should be connected such that it never crosses over the shaft centerline, if goes from the top of the shaft to below the shaft it will then be pulling the throttle open instead of trying to close it. The spring is usually connected to the very bottom hole in the lever and runs to a clip on the intake or the back bolt of the carb.

Check every inch of the throttle assembly. From the gas pedal to the carb. My son's 89 GT did that and we were pulling hair out by the handfuls trying to figure out why. It turned out to be an errant floor mat that would flip over onto the pedal enough to hold it there. It made for some interesting few seconds when it hung.
