$ to bid on 69 Mach1?
I looked at a 69 mach 1 today. The owners are dead, and it's going to the highest bidder. It has the shaker hood with 'Cobra jet' emblems and is an 'R' code ram air. It has a big motor in it, but how do I tell if it is the 428? I couldn't find any numbers on it. It looked as if it has been redone, and another guy there heard that it was a 390. It has a Holley carb with the #1850 on it. The motor hasn't been started in over two years and there was no battery to try it. The windshield is cracked. There are lots of little dents, but no major body damage. A magnet stuck everywhere I put it. There was no visible rust underneath. The tires are shot and the rims are aftermarket and probably need to be replaced. The dash has a few cracks, otherwise the interior is pretty good. It does stink like stale air and mice. It has traction bars, so I'm sure it was run. There is no rear or front spoiler.
What's a bid that is a 'good deal' for me? |
Without seeing the car and not being able to start it, this will be tough, but I would be willing to bid $4000.00. I would go higher if I knew what it looks and runs like. As far as the engine being a 390 or 428 you need to get that engine code off the block to be sure.

We couldn't see any numbers on the block. From what I've read, this isn't unusual since the big engines ars very 'tight' in the car. It did have the old blue 'powered by ford' valve covers. All pictures I've seen of 428CJ's have aluminum/chrome or Cobra valve covers. The exterior color is gold (my least favorite). I'm thinking even less than $4k, because this will have to be a total restoration inside, outside, and engine.

The reason I say 4K is the parts could be sold individually for that much, especially with the shaker setup. If it is a 428, there are not too many of them out there, and would have a big influence on price. What options does it have Disk Brakes, A/C, PS, etc..
The other thing is where you are located, here in the Dallas area the prices are climbing. ------------------ 69 351W Sportsroof deluxe [This message has been edited by Clark Rodgers (edited 07-28-2000).] |
428cj heads have 4 bolt holes to each exhaust port. one on top/bottom & both sides of the port.
The only other FE head like this is the 390 GT head wich I doubt somone swapped in. 390 GT head is still a great head though. Might help. |
