Engine Question??
Ok, one more question. I am looking for a new longblock and I went to Discount auto parts and they said that they have a 72 351W longblock for $850,I asked if the had the 69 windsor and he said that these are the same ones as the 69. Is this a good block, or would I be better off with getting my 289, which I dont think it ever been rebuilt since it was factory made in 64-65, rebuilt, if rebuilding is the way to go what price range would I be looking at from a mechinec to rebuild it. Thx for your help.

The 64-65 289 should be a 5-bolt motor. 351W won't bolt up to bell housing. I wouldn't buy an engine from Discount. Have had several come in my shop, installed elswear, with problems.
Cost to rebuild???? That is tough!!! Can go from a couple of grand to maybe 6k. Depending on what you want and how fast you want to go. Also, how much you can do yourself. |
i recently went to rebuild my 289 and it was 60 over already so i went to a 302 wich is exactly the same bolt pattern and you dont have to change anything

My 69 351W bolts to the same bellhousing that used to hold my 67 289.

The bell housing bolt pattern mid year in 65 prodcution from 5 bolt units to 6. Early 5 bolt bell housings will not work with later engines. The 351W should bolt right up to a 6 bolt housing.
As for 69 and 72 351w's check on the compression ratio, my book says cylinder heads were the same for both years, but who knows what heads are on it. It should have hardened valve seats. I can't imagine anyone selling an engine, pre 72 rebild or not, that was set up without the hardened seats. Block wise I don't know. I have heard that 351c motors cast before 72 were slightly stronger, but don't know it that is true for 351w. But if you are not going to be building lots of hp it shouldn't matter. |
the '64-65 5 bolt engine blocks WILL work with later trans, but they do require that you change the bellhousing on c-4 autos to 5 bolt. Actually the design of the 64 5 bolt c-4 auto is crap... they changed the design in 65. Anyways, the bellhousing just bolts up to the trans... it's a simple unbolt, bolt up job... easier to buy new bellhousing then change engines IMO. I'm not sure what is involved in manuals since i've never owned one... and i'm not involved in early style toploaders and such. Sorry couldn't help more. I'm currently running a 5 bolt engine with a 68 auto... i just changed bellhousings to get to work. oh... in my sig i have 302, but that's actually a 289block with 302 parts... http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...oard/smile.gif mini stroker!
