Crate Motor vs Rebuild

My '68 289 still runs good, it just doesn't produce the hp that I want. I've been looking at some of the complete long blocks that you can get from Ford Racing or Coast High Performance. Also, I've been checking with machine shops on rebuilding my 289 with all the goodies (maybe stroking it to 331).

So far the cost is about a wash. Anyone know of any advantages or disadvantages with going one way or the other?

I went through the same thing. when i was looking for an engine for my 66. and relized that you cant build a high hp engine for cheaper than the crate engines from fomoco. I ended up with the svt 351 rated at 385hp 400lbs, but every one says that ford rates their engines low. If your intrested iam actually selling my engine with headman headers for $5,000 still in crate.
