Can't Get fuel pump to work!!!
I just did a engine swap, still a 289 but the old fuel pump did not work, so I installed a new, still does not work. Tested all the lines up to the carb and they are fine. Any suggestion?

Are you sure your lines comming from your gas tank aren't clogged? Older gas tanks tend to have lots of debree that clogs them.
|
also make sure you connected the lines correctly. Did you install the fuel pump operating eccentric?
|
You may have a broken or loose fuel pump eccentric. It is on the front of the camshaft. It is a round piece that is offset on the cam so it can push the fuel pump arm up and down.

How do you check that, and how hard is that to fix? I know all the lines to the fuel pump are good, and the line to the carb is as well so that must be the problem

It is an easy fix, but takes a while because you need to pull the timing cover. I guess you could check it by removing the fuel pump and peeking in there with a flashlight. Here is a link with a diagram of how it works (sorry it is a festiva site, it was the first diagram I could find) http://www.fordfestiva.com/AboutFord...elpumpcarb.htm
Notice how the center of the eccentric is offset from the center of the cam. Did you install an eccentric on the timing gear?? ------------------ 67 Fastback - Arctic White Pearl paint 351W ,Trick Flow Aluminum Heads, Edelbrock TorkerII, Carter 750 CFM, Comp. Is it possible that you swapped in an engine that previously used an electric fuel pump? In this case, you need to install an eccentric.

I bought the engine already rebuilt, and had a friend put it in.at first the old fuel pump was the car, the when that did not work I bought a new one. Do you think I should fix it, or go electric? And if electic what kind? Thank you for all of your help!!! thanks for the link!!!
|
I got a ford crate motor that was set up for fuel injection. I went electric. Much less labor intensive than pulling the motor apart. I used a holley fuel pump. Don't know the model off hand. It seems to work great so far.

You can loosen the fuel pump just a little bit. If the eccentric is working properly the
pump will rock up and down. If you need to prime the pump, pressurize the gas tank with a air commpressor. Don't go overboard on the air pressure, a little should get the gas flowing to the pump Regards, BillGear www.289mustang.com |
Does any one use a electic fuel pump? Any good ones I should look at?
