Gas tank 69? 70? into a 66?

I was told today that a 69 or 70 tank will fit in a 66 (to get more capacity) with only modifying the filler tube. Anyone know if this is correct.

Not sure about the fit, but how about considering a fuel cell or a new tank from Fuel Safe. easily installed. With all the high performance items you have on the car now, its a natural.

I have been told it will fit. Although I can't seem to get a straight answer of whether the extra space is taken up on the bottom side or if the tank sits up higher in the trunk.

Kevin,
I was told that it does sit up higher in the trunk, which requires that you cut the filler tube to fit. I'm just trying to get confirmation. I was preparing to do the necessary fabrication to install a fuel cell, but if I can get 20 gals with just cutting the filler tube I'd rather do that. I'll post any info I find outside the message board

I saw a 68 with a 69 tank in it. The difference is in the height of the tank above the floor level. Modify the filler and it's a done deal.

From everything I've ever heard, GP and Gearhead are correct. Sits higher in early Stangs and needs minor correction/connection.

It's been a while since I messed with this, we put a 69 or 70 model tank in a 67. The 69 tank is 20 gal, and the 70 model is 22 gal. All will fit in any 65-70 Mustang with the right modification to the filler neck.

The 69-70 tanks do stick up above the 16 gal tanks, but it really is not very much, just a couple of inches.
