Commen problems
What are some of the most commen problems when buying older cars (late 60s)
|
Rust, rust and more rust.

The most important thing to look for is the chassis and body. Without them you have nothing. Everything else is easily repaired or replaced.

Mechanical stuff is easy to fix compared to body and paint. If you don't believe me price having the cowl repaired on a Mustang. |
Agreed with most of the above. Rust on different parts of the body. Old engines might have cracks in the block that aren't very obvious. If its been sitting for a long time it could have water in the fuel and mildew, roaches, and an assortment of bugs could have taken up residence in the interior. This is extreme abandonment though. Starter Celunoid(Sp?) could be burned out or about to be. But mostly rust is worst thing to look out for. And if its got old tires look out for crumbling rubber.
------------------ 1966 Baby blue Coupe, 289, Manual 3-speed, Edelbrock 650, Flowmaster 3-chambers, and minor upgrades. Interior work includes custom paneling, custom dash dress-up(I refuse to cut anything out of the original), Rewiring most of the electronics, Porsche 911 seats installed soon, and Stroker kit when I get to Texas. November of 2001 I will go back to Dallas. |
So the first think I should look for is rust? Is surface rust easy to fix in older cars or should I avoid it all together? I am looking to buy a new key turn engine and hope that it will keep most of the mechanic problems down. What else should I look for in the body (other than dents and bondo patches)? Hey , Pogo, look for rust that permeates the panels. If you don't know what that really is, then you need to learn about it. It's a MAOJR PAIN IN THE *** to fix it and lots of $$$. AGAIN LOTS OF $$$. $$$ if you get my point. And more and more $$$. Sorry for over emphasis. But this is true. My $.02 and probably too much more.

Yes Rust is a very key factor....but after looking for rust, id check seals...leaking water is also a pain in the *** . Especially if your looking for a mustang. Those Cowls...what a pain in the *** . So thats a little more information to look into.
