camshafts

hi i am in the middle of rebuilding my 302 for my 66 coupe and i wanted to put a performance cam in the rebuilt engine but leave everything else in the engine stock i was looking at a cam with a .430" lift, i want a cam that is not to radical but sounds like a ton of ponies. Would this cam be ok with stock engine parts? if not what do you recommend

i have a 69 mustang with 302 in it and when i rebiult it i put a comp cam 282 advertized duration and around 520 lift and it sounds like it has alot of ponies to it with a very nice idle. My engine is basically stock and it works great.

A .420 cam doesn't sound like too much of a cam. It should work with stock components, but if I was going to bother changing the cam I would go a little bigger. Problem is mainly the press-in rocker arm studs will pull right out of the head with high lift cams. You could get new heads with screw-in studs or take yours to a machine shop to get it done for @$50. There are still many other things that could use upgrading while you have it apart, but that is the big one.

buy a comp cams 260h high energy cam. Lift is about .450, mild idle, good torque.

I use a CC 268 HE in my 306. Valve lift is .456 with 1.6 rockers. Idles well with good low end torque. It's not too much for a mild street engine.
