problem with my 68
approximately 1 week ago the car started having a couple of problems, never one at a time, always in pairs.
1. When driving on the freeway / interstate and generally on an incline, the car begins to act as though it's running out of gas when it's actually full. At times it will backfire and stall once I stop. It then starts right up and go's but will soon begin the process all over again.The engine was rebuilt in 97 and the carb in 99.The gas tank is only a couple of years old. Fuel pump? 2. Another heater core went out, the third since I purchased the car in 96. Something strange that I just noticed tonight, the overflow for the heater has been dripping water but now there seem to be a clear oil or somethiing mixed in. It is clear and oily like brake fluid, could it be gas? Hopefully with all of you being owners this is something you've run across in the past. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again Roger |
For your first set of problems I think you are on the right track with questioning your fuel pump. Also do a quick check of the plugs and make sure they are all firing correctly. Sometimes a non-firing plug will cause a small backfire when the fumes are lit on the exit. I just went through this a few weeks ago. Also do a check for a partially clogged fuel line or fuel filter.
For your second problem, I'm not sure what to tell you. I haven't run into that problem at all and don't have any personal experience to help you out with. Someone here should know something though. [This message has been edited by Power (edited 08-17-2001).] |
I think you might be right about the fuel pump. It is relatively inexpensive and easy to change. Go for it. E

Check to see if your fuel filter is OK. It could be that. Put a pressure guage on the line to see what kind of pressure you're getting. I figure you'll need at leat 5 psi.

I know this is an old topic but I may have an answer...
your exhaust could be clogged , I had the same problem on a car an was stumped for months..as far as your heater cores leaking, it may be from a blown head gasket, I ve had that problem also..I may be wrong, hope this helps... |
backfiring, then running Good
Don't know if you have the problem solved since I haven't been to the site for some time, but;
My 67 was doing a similar thing and I tried everything I could think of. Did a bunch of checking around with my old Ford mechanic friends, and was told that a bearing in the distributor was a common cause of the problem. It causes sporadic timing changes. I bought a rebuilt distributor from NAPA, ripped out the petronics, going back to points which came in the rebuilt. The car runs like a clock now. Good Luck Dave |
uh... dont read this:rolleyes:
