Qs updating my electrical system and lights
Hi,
New to the forum tonight, seems like there are lots of members out there that know what they are doing. I have a 66 coupe that is fairly stock but a nice daily driver. I am currently trying to make it safer and more modernistic, a low key restomod. I have just installed a SSBC front disc conversion, which I highly recommend. I also have a Flaming River rack/pinion kit that I haven't had time to install yet, but everything looks good for that. If anyone wants to buy one, I have the name of a guy on eBay that will give you a good deal. Anyway, my next goal is my electrical system. I have a stock alternator setup and wagner halogens. I am disappointed with both. I want to go to a single wire setup, but conversion kits are quite spendy. Apparently a GM alt works well, but I don't really know anything past that like which ones and how high of amperage. I also want to go to xenon lights or something really freakin bright, but I have also heard that the wiring can't handle it and "relays" are in order. Can anyone speak from experience in this matter? Thanks, Aaron |
Re: Qs updating my electrical system and lights
As to hooking up the relays, heres a good instruction site here
My understanding: basically with a relay its kind of like with the starter solenoid. Instead of turning the starter from the key, the key activates a heavy duty switch. Which routes the power to the starter (or in this case the headlights) directly from the battery/alternator, bypassing the 'true" electrical system. Not sure about the 1 wire conversion/gm possibilities, but according to my manual, the stockers were rated up to about 60 amps. I would say for a semi stock car without a lot of added electronics you would be fine with like a 90 amp alt, there are several different 3g's that might work, dont know about wiring them though. Anybody else? Hope it helps. J |

Thanks a ton! That was a pretty comprehensive website. Anyone know more about the alternator?
Thanks |
