Average times for a stock 87-93 5.0 with manual transmission: 0-60: 6.2 to 6.5 seconds. Quarter mile: 14.4 - 14.8@ 95mph.

These are averages from car magazines of the period. Some 87-93 5.0 owners claim high 13's, some low 15's but low 6 second 0-60 and mid-14-second quarter mile times are verifiable and pretty much average for rhe 87-93 5.0/T-5 Mustangs.

Remember, most of these 87-93 5.0 models are getting harder to find in bone-stock form now and many have high mileage or modifications.

They are one of the best cars for mods. Just open a summit or jegs catalog and they both have a section for mustangs. The 5.0 is very easy to build for the strip or auto cross. If at any time you have a question just ask. The guys here are great and can help with anything. The mustang with mods will go well past 100k no problem.

Reliable? Easy to mod? Oh, man.

I don't think there is a more reliable engine than the 5.0. Takes lots of abuse without fuss.

Very easy and inexpensive to modify! With a small investment, you can make a fire breathing monster out of any 5.0 mustang! Excellent aftermarket support, and as the above post states, this message board has some of the best advice out there.

Good luck.

These cars wake up the most when you add a set of aftermarket heads and a new intake. By this point most people aready have the other supporting equipment. (gears, headers, exhaust, larger MAF, etc..)

I have several buddies with late '80s 5.0s that have over 150K miles and they still run strong and smooth and don't even use that much extra oil.
I have owned 3 different 5.0 Stangs - an 84 LX that I bought with 80K miles, an 87 LX with 50K and NOS, and a 79 Pace Car with 160K and driven them a total of about 50K miles. The only time I ever broke down was when I blew a radiator hose, which isn't Ford's fault anyway of course.
If you are smart with a small block Ford and don't make any big mistakes under boost or while spraying, you will have a good running machine for a long time.

Question: Do they have any common problems or rust areas to look out for?

Answer: Look for rust on the lower rear quarter panels, at the corners of the rear window molding (on the hatchbacks_, under/around the spoiler (hatchbacks) and
the usual places all cars rust, especially underneath.

Common problems are faulty power windows and door locks due to frayed door wiring and worn parts, sagging doors (easily fixed), leaking heater core (big job), cracked plastic radiator fans and broken fan clutch, faulty air pumps and alternators.

Question: Can I get a good reliable V-8 trunk or hatchback for 4000 dollars...

Answer: Yes. Look around, don't be in a big hurry. Hatchbacks are plentiful, they sold a ton of them. Trunks are somewhat rare but still available. The trunk (sometimes called a 'sedan') model might cost more if the seller knows what he/she has.

Question: I will have 2500. for mods, what should I get?

Answer: Answered on another thread;
Heads, intake, exhaust, rear gears, shifter and some minor mods, including FP and regulator.
