quick question

66 mustang new 302 block 10,000 miles on the motor. what oil and filter should i use. is synthetic good? i live in southern cali so theres not too low temps. thanks.

mustangII460 03-04-2003 08:07 PM

Motorcraft filter

I use synthetic on everything. 10w30.

I get the 5qt jug of Mobil 1 at walmart. Of course this stuff is high, but so is rebuilding a motor.

Same thing

I use exactly the same oil and filter as mustangII460, but I just get it at AutoZone.

Motorcraft # FL1A or FL1HP, the HP version flows more gal.per minute. You can take the best motor oil in the world, and if you never change it you will ruin the engine, or you can take the worst stuff on the market and chances are if you change it often enough you will be fine. Personally I love synthetics as they offer better protection than anything else, BUT you still have to change the oil on a regular basis. The filter will only trap so much dirt and then it needs changing, no matter how good the oil is.
You can buy a lot of oil and filters for what a engine costs!

Synthetic oils are fine if you don't want to change your oil as often, but otherwise you are fine if you just go with normal old 10W30. I recommend Pennzoil because it has a Purebase which is similar to the way synthetic oils start out (the are just refined more after that). If your engine is a newer engine DO NOT run synthetic in it. You never want to break in a new engine with synthetic oil. Pretty much every oil out there is fine if you change on the recommended 3000 mile or 3 month mark though. As for filter, FRAM is good but if you do some research you will find they are made in the same factory as some of the pennzoil ones. They are just given a different paint job and the easy grip. So if you want to save some money, go with the pennzoil filter too.

Do not mean to stir things up, BUT, in 24 years in the auto repair business you DO NOT want to use Pennzoil. Not unless you are committed to changing the oil every 3,000 miles, and I mean 3,000 miles, not 1 tenth of a mile over. All of the advertizing in the world does not change the fact that Pennzoil will sludge up a engine at the first hint of anything! It is in fact made from a parrifin base, which everyone knows parrifin is a wax. I can look at the inside of any engine and tell you if it has had a steady dose of Pennzoil during its life. Unless you change it out RELIGOUSLY. In fact it would be best if you went to a 2,000 mile change intervaL, that way if you miss the oil change interval by 1 or 2 miles it won't hurt the engine. In my opinion I put Quaker State right up there with Pennzoil, change it often enough and you may not have problems, if you don't look out.
Now as far as using synthetics, I am for it all the way, even in a new engine, PROVIDED it is broken in (rings seated). With the modern rings that are currently available this is in as little as 30 minutes if done right.
I know everyone has an opinion about this, and mine is based of 20 plus years of building and repairing engines, not to say that someone may have had different results than I have, it is just that I personally have seen Pennzoil as having dependability and durability problem, and 98% of the other mechanics, technicians, engine builders and racers that I have personally talked to concer.
Anyway you can take the worst engine oil in the world (Pennzoil) and if you change it and the filter often enough you will not have any problems, you can also take the best engine oil in the world (put your favorite here) and if you do not change it often enough you will have problems.

2 Things

1. FRAM's suck without going into it here you can look at this webpage and it is all there in black and white (well 256 colors anyway) the actual study http://minimopar.net/oilfilterstudy.html and the over view page http://minimopar.net/oilfilters.html

2. I have to agree and disagree on the penzoil issue if it is synthetic Mobil 1 is the only one on these shores for non-synthetic i use Pennzoil and yes it will sludge up fairly quickly but if you change it religisouly it will also keep you motor cleaner because it has higher degerent additives. Basically what i am saying is some of the cleanest motors i have pulled apart have used Pennzoil but some of the dirtiest have use pennzoil as well.

mustangII460 03-07-2003 10:52 PM

Mobil 1 is the best because over the many many many years of changing oil and rigging cars together and half azzing everything like a drunk monkey. My motors still run smooth.

Fram collapse.

Motorcraft GOOD.

So, like I tried to point out despite my biased views, it is more about the frequency of the oil changes than the oil itself. I always try to fill the new filter with oil before I install it as this cuts down on running time with no oil pressure by 5-10 seconds. Yes I have put a stopwatch on several engines and timmed the length of time untill oil pressure builds with dry filters and pre-filled ones. And with a mechanical oil pressure gauge hooked up it can take up to 10 plus seconds for the engine to fill a dry filter and actually get oil pressure to the gauge. Take that time, multiply it by the number of oil changes thru the life of the engine and you would be amazed at how long the engine runs without oil pressure if you do not pre-fill the filter. It is a pain to do but does wonders for the life of the engine.

mustangman65_79 03-08-2003 05:03 AM

I use Quaker State synthetic oil. 20W50, seems to work the best. As for a filter, I used to use the fram, but now I use the new K&N filter.
