Under my 68 coupe (302), I see what remains of the original rear axle vent hose (half the hose, held by a clamp to the underbody). I know I don't have the original rear-end and believe it's an 8-inch. Where I believe the original vent hose went on the original axle, there's like a cap on it. Do I need to remove the cap and install a rear axle vent hose like the original axle had?

I would install the vent hose back on your rear. It should go up into the frame near the clamp. Just make sure you give enough slack in the hose for the movement of the axle downward to full extension of the shocks.

You need it to allow the build up of pressure, from all the gears turning, to vent so you don't push the oil out the seals. |

Does it matter that I don't have the original rear end. I have no idea what the rear end came out of. It does appear to have an outlet (plugged though) where the original rear end had one?

Different rear shouldn't make any difference. The rear still needs to vent. I would connect a vent hose to it. |
