rear end
What size rear end came in the stangs 64-69? ex: 8.8, 7.5, 9"? What stock gear ratio usually? I'll research it too but I figured I'd get a faster answer here with ya'll.

The V-8 cars were 8" or 9". The 9" was the Hi-po rear. There were some smaller ones that the 6 cyl came with, but I can't remember the correct size.

I would like to add to,"Gearheads" correct reply.
Most any car from Ford And Merc. that came with a V8 had a 9 inch. Starting in 1957 ending in 1986. Also note your bigger 6 cylinder engined cars also carried a 9 inch. Most cars with engines like a 170-200 6er carried a 8 inch rear. Most all standard v8s came with a 9inch open carrier, with 28 spline axles. 8 inch 28 spline axles will work in the 9 inch carrier. As long as the lenght is the same. Pre-66 9 inch rears also have smaller axle tubes. Alot of power can be put on the tubes, but in high horspower applications a post 66 housing should be used. Pre-66 housings can be identified by the lack of a,"bluge" when looking at it from behind. Same look as the 8 inch. If the carrier has,"WAR" stamped on it,its a older carrier, dont use it in high horspower combos. As for gear ratios its a grab bag. When hunting a big spline high ratio rear. Look for the large cars with even larger engines. There you may score a 31 spline locker,or posi,or even a Trac-loc differential. Most of these combos are gone though, but not all. The majority of ratios from small windsor motors, fall usually between 2.73's-3.25's. But, can be found in those bigger cars with large engines. Imagine that. And if your lucky to find a 9 inch carrier with a "N" stamped between the ribs, keep it. Sorry for too much info. BUt hope it helped anyway. |

This is a good question that I haven't seen good documentation on rearends. I think that Gearhead is correct. The 8" was the primary rearend for v8 mustangs, with the 9" reserved for special orders and hipo cars. I6 cars came standard with a smaller rearend, either a 7 or 7.5", not sure which. The 8.8 rearend is a "relatively modern" rearend, definitely not in a classic. Here is a page that gives some info on rearend ratio's that were available. Unfortunately it is not year specific. If the tag is still in on the rearend you can figure out what ratio came from the factory. http://www.ridgenet.net/~biesiade/Fordrears.html
I believe (would not bet) that the "standard" rear ratio for a 289 C code auto was 2.73 and the manual was 3.03. |

John Z is correct except for one thing the 6 cyl's came with the 8 inch the only rearend ever smaller than that was the 7.5 and also sometime in the late 70 to mid 80's they had a 6.5 the played with but I don't think it ever really made the street in enough numbers to worry about all the 64-69 had either the 8 or 9 though that was the only rearends made/used for ford in the passenger cars at that time.
