Rear end question
I was wondering if anyone happened to know what the factory (stock) size was for a 67 Fastback. I have a 3.00 differential and was wondering if the rearend was an 8 in. or a 9 in. Also what year were the 8.8 rearends made? Thanks for all the help.

Well I believe it should be an 8 inch rear end. The 8.8 came out in the mid 80's I think 85-86 in the Stangs. And the 8.8 is current today. Nothing like an 8 or 9 inch rear having had all 3 under various cars my vote goes 9 first 8 second 8 third I don't much care for the quad shock internal carrier rears.

The easiest way to tell is to look at the bottom most bolts that hold the third member in the housing. If you would be able to get a socket on those bolts to loosen them, it's an 8". If the shape of the metal on the third member will only allow you to get an open end wrench on those two bolts, it is a 9".

Cool, thanks guys. I really appreciate the info from your reply's. I guess i'll have to try and get a socket on those bolts when i get back from vacation.

The standard ratio for a 4 speed was 3:00 and the standard ratio for an automatic 2:71. Optional ratios were 3:25. 3:50, 3:89 and 4:11. All ring and pinions are still made however the 3:25 is the hardest to find.

I'm not sure where my car fits in on the most recent post, but like i said, my ratio is 3:00, but my car is a 3 speed standard. Maybe i'm just confused now.
