rear end size

I have a 68 mustang w/ 302 and 3 speed automatic. Iwas curious of how i could determine what size rear end i have and what type of differential. I plan on gettin some gears soon.

My 68 Mustang 289, C-4 had a 8 inch rear at 3.00 ratio.

Get the axle number off the drivers door ID plate. Then we can figure out what you have.

The 8 and 9 inch look very similar. Rule of thumb. If you can put a socket on the lower pumkin bolt it's a 8 inch. If you use open end only it's a 9 inch.

well, I was going to post a simular post like this one, but...
I have 2.80:1 gears in my car, and was wondering if I should change them, nothing too low becuase I still need freeway use. The tires I got now are 185/70 r14, soon, I hope, to have a 15 X 8 wheel. Also, I need to change the rear tires soon(too much fun with burnouts) I think the next tires are 215/70 r14. Bigger rear tires cause I have it lifted and plan to lift it more with 3" lift springs. I like the lifted look of musuale cars.
