Smile Rear Seal Leak

First off I know nothing really about cars, but I seem to have a rear seal leak in my 66 gt 289. Does the motor have to be pulled to correct this? And my motor always runs fairly hot say 3/4 I was told by the person I bought this car that it runs hot. I proceeded to drive it home about 200 miles without any problems. Should I change the thermostat anyway. Any help with these would be appreciated. Thank You.
