Rebuilt Carb causes "chug" "chug" at ignition
So I recently rebuilt my Edelbrock 650 on my 67 mustang and renistalled. It started once, ran a few minutes and cut off. On the next few tries it gives a "chug" "chug" , kinda like its gasping for air. There's plenty of fuel getting into the venturis, so maybe it flooded. Not quite sure. I did have to alter the float height to meet Edelbrocks recomendations; maybe that wasn't a good idea since the car ran ok before.
I reset the idel mixture screws(tightened and backed out 2 full turns) but its still having a problem firing up. Anybody have any quick advice? Should I just pull it off again and recheck the floats? |

Sounds like it may be flooded. I'd pull it apart and check the float level.
If you don't tip it over you can remove the top and see the fuel level easily. |

personaly ive never had any luck with the Edelbrock line of carbs, seems like they will work fine for about a year or maybe 2 and then people start having problems (like flooding and rough idle)i get alot of chevys in my shop that have the Edelbrocks on them and with the warranty that Oreilly's has ,the folks usually have to go back and get a new one(and sometimes the new ones are crap too). ive had holleys for years on my cars with excellent performance but i went back to autolite factory carbs and they work great so far. my advise would be get ya a 650 holley vac sec. or even a demon. just remember you get what you pay for when your buyin a carb. ;)

I'm just the oposite, I've had nothing but good luck with AFB's. It's the darn Holley's with their leaks and power valves that drives me crazy.
I had Holleys on my Donzi and later Cigarette. They'd blow a power valve and I'd be out there rocking back and forth changing the power valve so I could get home. Had to idle through the "no wake" zones. With the blown power valve, it was hard to keep it idling without loading up. I switched to AFB's, a little triming and not a problem. Also, ran dual 500's on my last Mustang and am building a 347 now with dual 500's. To me they are much easier to tune and hold the tune better. "That's my story and I'm sticking to it !!" |

oh there a good cheap carb , thats why oreilly's sell um...lol..i put holleys on for customers new outta the box and most time its just a simple air adjustment and thats it, sometimes i have to adjust the float if the intake is a lil tilted, but i dont have to take the top off the carb to do it. i dont run power valves in my dragster gas carbs but before i put the motocraft carbs on my street stuff i had holleys on um and never blew a powervalve until i had a ignition problem and it coughed back threw the carb but now days mr. gasket makes a power valve blowout preventer...6 one and half dozen the other.....

Thanks guys! I took it off and found that one of the floats was seated improperly. So the carb is good, but there seems to have an air leak somewhere. I will repost a new question, any help will be appreciated...........
