running problem--losing mind
Hey guys,
I have the same problem for about a year now. I cant the this car to stay running is definitely fuel issue. Here is what I have replaced: fuel pump, filter X11, tank, fuel lines, carb., fuel sender, distributor, cap, rotor, wires, plugsX2, exhaust manifold, head gasket, thermostat, heater core, water pump. all hoses(thinking it was a cooling issue). Now it runs great at idle but if I drive it more than a mile all it wants to do is die. I have had this car about 2 1/2 yrs and driven it maybe 350 miles since I have had it because of the running problem. Now there was a time for about 3 months that I drove it everyday and only had to replace fuel filter once and drove great. I replace tank and sender about 1 month ago and the plugs today. The tank had about 3 inches of slugde in it because I cut it open afterwards. But I am getting ready to sell the f-ing thing and buy another one that is almost done or close to done. I guess I'm just know v8 better and not this straight 6's. Please help!!!!! thanks ross |
Re: running problem--losing mind
Let me guess:
Autolite 1100 carb? |
Re: running problem--losing mind
If the tank had that much crap, I bet the fuel lines do too..

Re: running problem--losing mind
I ve replaced the fuel lines with the tank at the same time.
And the card is the 1 barrel (junk) guess that is the 1100 autolite |
Re: running problem--losing mind
By the way the symtoms happen about 2 months ago I drove it for about 2 months straight and replaced the filter twice. Clean the carb w/cleaner after the tank and lines w/new filter. It ran alright after change but w/ missfire so I replaced the plugs and ran better. I had it run for about 15 mins, and drove it around my neighborhood which is about a 1 mile (neighborhood has circle street around it) it died about 3 times for the last 1/4 mile unless I had the gas on with it in neutral(lot of speed bumps).
I'm probably going to have my friend look at it. My strong point is fuel injection not carburetors. |

I still can't decide if I'm more happy that it runs well, or more pissed off that I wasted so much time with the 1100s... I tried 4 of them, including one right from the parts house... If you don't find the problem otherwise, I might suggest that you take a trip to ebay and look for a different type of carb... http://www.blake.com/oemcarbs/ford.htm Here's a link to get some ideas from. |
New 68 Stang owner needs help badly
Hey guys. I am a new Mustang owner and I am having issues. I bought a 68 w a stock 289 and a carter 600cfm on it. It needs alot of work. I am having issues with it idling. Right now it starts up immediatly but it stays at like 1100 rpms. it dosnt kick down. at all. The electric choke is not connected to a power. where would you suggest to hook it up at?
even so, it still rough idles and is loud. I tried to time it but the needle from the hb is gone. I bought a new timing pointer and for the life of me i cannot figure out how it goes on. Can anyone help me with these issues? If so, I would greatly appreciate it. |
Re: running problem--losing mind
The reason it stays idling at 1100 is because The electric choke never gets it off the fast idle step. Run the wire to the ig. terminal of the starter relay feeding juice to the electric choke while the car is running. That should fix it. BTW, you really should start a new topic thread when you have a new question pertaining to your car rather than to someone else's post. Welcome to MW.

I apprecaite the feedback and the etiquete on posting messages. I am still learning so thanks for your patience..
I have done this and it works alot better thanks.. One problem is though is it really rough idles but I am not able to time it as the pointer is no longer there. I did buy a new timing pointer but for the life of me I cannot figure how it goes on. I know this is a silly question but it is frustrating me. Can anyone help me with this one? |
Re: running problem--losing mind
Hey philly,
Do you have to have machine shop bore it out or can I do it. Linkage location not problem I just dont know about the boring. Where is the best place to get the carb for cheap price. I also saw online an adapter that goes from one barrel to 2 barrel have you heard anything good about that. Thanks Here is the link: http://www.mustangdepot.com/OnLineCa...carb-adapt.htm |
Re: running problem--losing mind
I used a rotary tool... The spacer is aluminum (at least on the 68 200) and a course flap wheel ate it up without too much problem for me. I think I needed to take it out less than a quarter inch... just enough for the butterfly flap to clear and a bit more.
I really lucked out with getting a carb. I paid $25 for the new rebuild on Ebay about a year ago. I'd suggest keepin an eye out for them there. I'm sure you're not on right now, but I see that there is another carb that was made for those 170/200 motors: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ford-...QQcmdZViewItem There were a few models that Ford used for those engines. The RBS that I used was actually to a 72 250 from my Mustang. I put the new carb on the 72 (I bought the new one for the sole reason that it was cheap, I didn't really need a new one but I figured I wouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth) and had the old one sitting around before I figured "why not" and tried the swap on my 68 200. Other places that I looked for a new RBS looked like it ran about $150 or more without a core... As far as your link. I don't know what to tell you. A "small" 2 barrel might work well, but I would hate to put that spacer on (will clearance be an issue?) and a new 2 barrel, only to find that everything behind me gets painted black. |

Re: running problem--losing mind
I just remembered... and this may be a deal breaker for you.
I had to "modify" the air cleaner as well because the air horn is bigger on the RBS than it was on the Autolite 1100. |
