![]() New to this site and was wanting to get some input on a situation I have. I currently has a 66 coupe I am converting to a T-5. The problem is the T-5 I have is out of a 95 GT, which the input shaft is 5/8" longer than earlier models. I have searched around on the web and can't find a whole lot of info on it. Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

![]() because of the longer input shaft, you are going to have to use the 95 bellhousing.and as i recall it doesnt fit the early cars very well, or so i am told. best to sell the tranny you have and get a 93 or earlier T5.

![]() There's some bad information given here so watch out. If you use the T5 you have, the easiest conversion is to swap out the input shaft. Get the earlier input shaft and simply unbolt the long one and bolt in the short one. Its that easy. The short input shaft and collar is typically $125.
http://www.moderndriveline.com/about.htm Call Modern Driveline about parts and procedures. Once modified, you can use one of the following approaches to installing the T5 in your classic car: a. Use original Toploader clutch box, clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing. Use with California Pony Cars T5 adapter plate and T5 crossmember. Use with factory clutch linkage. b. Use Late Model Mustang clutch box, clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing. Use with Cable clutch kit. Use Windsor-Fox style crossmember. Generally its not a good idea to mix parts among these two engineering approaches. They are different and install the tranny slightly differently. Mixing parts brings headaches. Lastly, if you use approach (b) above use the late model Mustang 157 tooth flywheel and pressure plate OR have your flywheel drilled to accept the late model pressure plate OR use a pressure plate specifically designed for use with early flywheels (Centerforce). If you don't follow this advice, chances are your pressure plate and flywheel bolt and holes won't match up. It is possible to use 164 tooth components ('69-'73) but then you have to use 164 tooth Toploader bell housing, starter, flywheel. Same cautions about mixing pressure plate types apply. Be sure the flywheel bolt holes and pressure plate bolt holes match. Note: the only advantage of using 164 tooth components is these allow you to use 11" clutch components. The 157 tooth only allows 10" and 10.5" components to be mounted. Last edited by Jeff65; 07-15-2003 at 02:41 PM.. |
