Shift Selector Light

I just pulled the console out of my 67 Fastback. I wanted to work on the light that is supposed to move back and forth with the A/T shifter so that it lights up the dial with the gear you selected. The light works but was just laying on the floor underneath the console. I can see how it hooks back up to the console but there is no part that connects it to the shifter itself. Has anybody hooked one of these up and knows how it works?

My 68 didn't come with a console so I'm not sure if it will be exactly as yours (I assume it would be). On mine, it has a metal cylinder with the bulb inside. On the outside of the cyclinder it has a clip, which I believe was welded to the cylinder. The two prongs squeeze together and then it clips into a rectangular opening in the shift rod. Your prongs may have broken off. When I took mine out to replace the burned out bulb it was so far rusted I destroyed the bottom end trying to get the bulb out. Couldn't find anyone who sold that part so i ended up doing a lot of jimmy-rigging with duct tape to keep the bulb in the cylinder and replaced the whole light socket with one from AutoZone. Works great now and noone can see the awful contraption I created. If your clips are broke off you may have to use some duct tape and strap it to the shaft rod where it's supposed to go.

A little duct tape and some coors can fix almost anything...

I use JB Weld almost as often as duct tape, LOL.

And I find Corona much more effective than Coors. Each to his own. E.

I just installed a console in my 68, there should be a plastic rod that connects to the tab on the metal portion of the shifter plate and then to the light. As the lever moves the rod moves the light.

Hope this helps.
