Question Pro 5.0 Shifter problem

Hi!

I have a 2001 GT. I bought a Pro 5.0 shifter yesterday and went to install it. Things were going pretty good until I fired it up and could only place the car in 3rd and 4th. As I was trying to think of why this would be I remembered that Ford changed the tranny from the T45 to the Tremec 3650, and when I checked the TR code, it said "K", which means I do have the newer tranny. Now I am no mechanic by any means and I rely on this board and the people at American Motor Sports in Orlando to advise me on what to buy. The man at the shop went out to my car and showed me how to pop the console off, so he knew that it was a 2001. He assured me that this would work. But when I examined the little ball at the end of the new shifter and the one on my stock shifter, they are very different.

Cutting to the chase, did I buy the wrong shifter for this transmission? If not, why doesn't it want to go into gear properly? Thanks!
