The shifter and the tranny just need to be synchronized. From under the vehicle, loosen the nut where the shift rod meets the shifter. Place the shifter inside the car in D. Next, grab the top of the shift lever that comes out of the side of the tranny (the other end of the shift rod you just loosened the nut on is attached to it). Firmly move the top of the shift lever that comes out of the tranny all the way back. Then, move it forward until it hits the first detent. Then move it forward to the second detent. Now try moving the shifter through the gears. It should go through all of them.
