The first 5.0 H.O. was built in 1982, and was a 2bbl carbed, 157 hp monster with whopping 8.3:1 compression pistons! The H.O engine got a 4bbl carb in 1983, and it's hp went up to 175. In 1984 and 1985, the H.O. 5.0 was offered with either a 4bbl Holley or CFI. HP ranged from 165 to 210. Up to this point, all H.O. 5.0's had had flat tappet cams. 1985 was the first year a roller cam was used in some of the H.O. engines (4bbl H.O.'s had a roller, while CFI H.O.'s had a flat cam). In 1986, all 5.0 H.O. engines had a roller cam, and used sequential fuel injection with speed density. This would remain true until the California 5.0 H.O. in 1988 was released with a MAF system replacing the SD. In 1989, all 5.0 H.O.'s were MAF, and would remain that way until the 5.0 was laid to rest. The only things that made all H.O. engines different from the 1979 and older 5.0's was the use of a heavier weighted balancer and flywheel, and a camshaft with the firing order used in 351 (Cleveland and Windsor) and 460 engines.

Take care,
-Chris
