Mushy brakes....

Ok, I just changed out my front brakes memorial day weekend and now they feel mushy to me.

Yes I have drums. My auto-adjusters were working fine when I tested them. Is it maybe just because they are new? It almost feels like they have air in the line, but how is that possible if I didn't mess with the lines at all? I haven't tried bleeding them yet because I didn't have much brake fluid, but I have to change out a wheel cylinder before bleeding them anyway(broken bleeder valve). Any ideas at all??

They still work but the point of grip is much lower to the floor then I'm used to and they feel a little mushy up top. Is my adjusters maybe not working right??

Any help is always appreciated.

Here's something to think about. When you replaced the brakes, you had to push the slave cyls back in correct? Maybe they picked up an air pocket when you did that.

You set the auto adjusters so that the brakes just start to rub the drum when you spin it by hand, correct?

Not to insult you, but did you bleed the brakes afterwords?

No I didn't bleed them afterwards bacause I didn't have enough brake fluid.

Yes, I adjusted the pads out till they just started to drag.

It sounds to me like there might be a little air in there after all. I'll pick up some more brake fluid tonight and change the cylinder and then bleed it and see what happens.

Got em fixed. Bled em too, no air. I didn't have the pads out far enough evidently. And the auto-adjuster on the left side wasnt working right. So now its got no problems now. THanks for the help guys.

That's right power, I always adjust mine kind of tight, and let them wear in a little. Not real tight, but some resistence when turning the wheel by hand. Also, I never depend on those auto adjusters. I still adjust those occasionally, just like in the old days.

Gearhead999 is right too, always bleed those SOB's every time you do anything on them.

Glad to hear you got it fixed up. You never sluff off problems with brakes and steering. If they fail, well.........you're in for one heck of a ride !!!!!!!
