![]() any ideas?? the 289 is running really rough. it seems to be electrical. the distributor points, condenser are new. the cap rotor and wiring is virtually new. it seems to be a timing problem. the vacuum lines are also good. Does the vacuum advance/decline ever go bad on the distributor? or the diaphragm in the vacuum component ?? the engine fires but it but is rough between accelleration and decelleration. ideas?

![]() Oh yes, the Vacum advance units can go bad.
I put Diane in storage (my 64 1/2 with 289) for several months, when I brought her out, she had a REAL BAD BOG, and kinda run rough at certian throttles. Checked the timing, it was good, checked the lines, they were okay, took my Vacumm advance unit off, and dust and chunks of crap came falling out. I got a hand pump and tested it. Needless to say, it wouldnt do crap. I have a Dual Point Mallory Distributor, that I just recently found out they had stopped making like 15 years ago. Had a real FUN time trying to find a replacement Vacum Advance unit. Hell, half the people I talked to didnt even know what Vacumm Advance was. ![]() ------------------ 64 1/2 "D" code Red Mustang Coupe. 289, C4, Mallory duel point. ![]() Not insulting your intelligence at all bro, but did you check the plugs? I just had to clean mine because of fouling and mine was running like dookie with the same symptoms that you listed.
If you have points and condensor make sure that you have gapped it correctly with a feeler gauge. try tossing a timing light on it if you have one. If you don't just try turning the distributor back and forth. ![]() |

![]() thanks for the info. yes I pulled the plugs and cleaned them. actually they were pretty good. I pulled thedistributor tonight. the vacuum advance was stuck and the plate that slides and advances the timing was pretty sticky. I took it down to the last screw cleaned and reassembeled. The dual vacuum lines... the vacuum advance diaphram seems to work fine. the inner vacuum retaqrd sucks air. so maybe that is the problem. the plate on the dist si sliding with the advance well I put it together and it ran good for about one min then it started to cough and gag. I moved the distributor and not much help. If you can get the engine running and hi rpm it seems fine only when you lower rpm does it coughg and choke out. tomorrow a new vacuum advance if I can find one. thanks for teh imfo if you happen to have any more ideas plz let me know. than\x
