![]() I have 65 Stang with a 3-speed with a 200ci engine. I started grinding in first and reverse and 2nd and 3rd won't even budge.
I replaced the throwout bearing, clutch disc, pressure plate, and clutch fork pivot bracket. When I put it all back together, I used the clutch alignment tool to act as the tranny to see if it would all work right. I noticed that even with the clutch upper rod adjusted all the way out, the throwout bearing still wasn't engaging the fingers on the pressure plate enough to release the clutch disc. The z-bar is not cracked and the internals of the tranny are good. Would an adjustable clutch rod work in this situation or did I do something wrong? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This is my everyday driver and I haven't driven it in 3 months because of this. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!! |

![]() Chewy, Back in 1976 my first car was a 66 with the six and the 3 speed. This was my first car, In the 10 years that I owned the car I went through 3 new trannies and ended up finding a fully sycro 4 speed. It took a different bell housing and some work on the linkage to make it work.. Maybe it was just me learning how to drive but that 3 speed seemed the weak link...My 15 year old son just picked up a 67 with an aoutomatic and it is bringing back many memories. Tony

![]() I have a fully synchronized 3-speed but it's for a V8. What all do I need to change to make it work? And will I need a adapter plate or what?

![]() Chewy, As, I recall...it's been 25 years...I did need a different bell housing..the bolt patern was different..and I had to shorten the shift linkage about an inch or so..If my memory serves me right..Tony

![]() This is the bellhousing you would need:
(That's the T-5 adapter plate on it), however that bellhousing WILL NOT bolt up to your block. Ford changed the casting of the 200 block in '66 to have dual bellhousing patterns, and in '67 started using the same transmissions between the 6 and 8. To put a V8 3spd behind the '65 and earlier 200 like this: ![]() You need this plate: ![]() It bolts up to the smaller bell and gives the proper spacing and bolt pattern to mount the V8 tranny behind the 200. Other things need to change (like the clutch disk, pilot, t-out, yoke, etc..) I've seen your postings all over the place (Metro/FordSix/StangNet/Here). Tell me though, did you have your flywheel resurfaced? Also, what did you replace the pivot bracket with? (Just looking for that 'slap me on the head fix' ![]() Al |

![]() I resurfaced the flywheel and put a V8 bracket so it would be stronger. I had to shave a little off the edges to get the fork to pivot past the bracket. But a friend did the same thing to his and it worked great. But you're right, I've been to every sight I could find and I thought Stangnet was pretty good until I got this reply. You have given me more info than anybody. Adding those sights and pictures really helped. Just one question, how much would that adapter plate cost approximately? I can exchange everything else for a 9" set-up. (right now I have 8.5") By the way, would I need a 9" or 10"? Thanks again, CHEWY

![]() Did you try replaceing the pilot bushing? Sometimes i get a lil grinde going from 2nd ta 3rd but I know ist due to the shifter linkage adjustment( It was a lil sloppy when I changed the lower shifter boot housing so I made an adjustment oops ) Also i found that the 'clutch equaliser bushing & mount had gone bad [cost aprx. 12.bucks] solved the problem.

![]() The 8.5 should be fine. Try going to my link & looking under the specks. I listed from ford. It may help to see how ford put the original combos together I have the 289 2V three speed combo.

![]() You keep the 8 1/2" flywheel, but use a clutch disk from a early/mid 80's Ford 4cyl car. I have the specifics on that clutch disk. The pilot and t-out are from a '67 and later 6cyl 200 car.
I'm not sure this is the problem, but did you have the pressure plate mounting surface of the flywheel machined the same amount as the clutch surface? It's the recessed flywheel (the one in the top left of the pic) http://pages.prodigy.net/al.martin/200Clutch.jpg I've heard of that causing problems with clutch slippage. I make and sell the plates for $120 + shipping. It insludes the hardware in the pic. I machine each plate individually and pay a machinist to cut it for me. http://pages.prodigy.net/al.martin/303.JPG I currently don't have any made and the machinist I use recently lost his wife, and is also extremely busy, so I'm not sure when I can get another one cut. I'm trying to get a few done so I can stock them though. Al |

![]() The engine I have is the older model one which only has the mounting holes for the smaller tranny. (not the V8 tranny) These plates that you get made, will they mate up the bigger tranny to the small holes on my engine block? And how do I get away with the clutch disc being 8.5"? Don't you have to get a bigger clutch disc to fit over the bigger splines that are on the bigger tranny?

![]() That's exacly what that plate does. It allows you to mount the larger transmission to the '65 and earlier 144 / 170 / 200 blocks. It provides the proper mounting pattern and offset to do it. I've been running it behind my '65 200 for 11 years now, and have never had a problem.
You use a clutch disk from any of the following: 87-92 mustang with 2.3L. 84-88 Mustang SVO. 79-83 Mustang 2.3L, 4spd except turbo. 79-82 Mustang with turbo 4&5spd. 74-78 Mustang 2.3L with 4spd. They all should come up with the same p/n and are the correct 8 1/2" disk with larger spline to make it work. Al |

![]() That is awesome. So I take it that you use the same pressure plate also. Any idea when you'll get some more made? Thanks again for replying to me. I tried putting that adjustable bottom clutch rod and all I did was bend my z-bar when I tried to fine-tune the adjustment. I finally got it to go in gear but there was a squeeling noise as if the clutch disc wasn't working right. I have no idea what to do. Thanks again............CHEWY

![]() The Stang is back on the road but I need a throwout bearing for a 65 Stang, 200ci, with a 3-speed tranny. The inside diameter has to be 15/16". The 1 1/8" bearing is the same one but inorder for it to work on my car, it has to have a sleeve put in to the middle of it so it will adapt. Anybody got one?
