Default Flaring Fenders

Just realized i wouldnt actaully have to change the width of my whole rear end if i could just make the body wider so how do you flare fenders on a early 60's model?

Whats the max amount you can actually flare without looking stupid?
Or woudl be jsut be wiser to mold some flares for it and weld them on?
