Default a '72 with an 302 engine and a FMX tranie????

For a while now I'm trying to get my 302 engine balanced. I've replaced the damper and my next move was to replace the flex plate, now it turns out that I have a stock 302 engine with a FMX transmission. The mechanic at my local USA car shop says that this is a very rare combination. Now comes the problem, I've ordered a new flex plate while thinking that I have a C4 transmission, this flex plate does not match the combination 302 FMX (I thought that the flex plate was only related to the engine, it seems it's not?!?). The mechanic said that in '73 this combination wasn't rare and that the only difference (of the flex plate) was the balance weight, he proposed to remove the weight from the flex plate. Is this a good idea????????
