![]() Before you beat yourself up too much, or possibly buy into another problem, why don't you try to figure out why this engine smokes? Did you do a compression check? Was it sitting for a long time? Did you run it long enough to be sure it wasn't just burning off accumulated oil in the cylinders from sitting? Have you checked the valve stem seals? These are notorius for hardening and cracking away on the 289, and they are very easy to change. Try to find out where it's getting the oil to burn before you write it off.

![]() well to be honest i didn't look into it that much. went i first started it it was okay but I gave it one good rev up and it started to smoke now the oil pressure is ok I didn't do any compresion test. I was thinking rings right away. now I have had guild go bad on my mopar motor they smoke when you start them up but then goes away or lessens. this smokes prety good the hole time. Now the motor seem ok other wise just smokes perty bad. you say it is a easy change to change guild? how easy and what would i need? and does it sound like that is the problem. It would beat changing the motor. the car was a daily drive for a guy and he sold to a (no nice word comes to mind) the person i bought it from. Probaly sat for a few month at least. I ran it for a while it is not left over oil. If you throtal it, it is worse then if you hold it at a solid RPM but either way it smokes. what do you think should I give it a shot?

![]() If it smokes all the time....well there is something big time wrong. I would lean toward bad rings, broken rings, bad piston, etc.
The valve guides and seals usually only show smoke on start up. Sounds major to me. Sorry to tell you that.

![]() no problem and not insulted at all yes blue smoke I am 99% sure it is oil smoke. it does not have a smell to it like coolant and it is not black like gas.... when I checked into it further it seem to have alot of smoke coming out of the oil cap which tell me bad rings..... just a thought. with sujestion form a few people I was thinking valve guilds but it seems I have a ring problem. I am in reading PA.

![]() Well, be sure to pull your plugs and find out for sure where the problem might be...
Reading... heck, that is where I picked up my 68 in December... may as well pull your valve covers to check if you can see anything there as well. Also, check your oil level... sometimes people fill their oil to unwarranted levels (usually in an attempt to hide a problem)and end up pushing the oil all over the place... I've seen it a number of times...just a thought. |

![]() Just a thought, but if you have to change engines, swap a 302 in there. Everything will swap over including the heads, so you will not be out very much money on the swap. I say this because you can always put the 289 on a stand for a later time when money is not as big of a problem. A 302 should be fairly simple to come buy with little money to spend, especially when compared to a 289. If you are worried about shows, very few people can pick up on the fact that I have a 302 short block in mine, with 289 front dress.
Make sure and look into the 289 before decidng it is dead though. Ryan

![]() well the after taking the advice of alot of the helpful people in here . I check the compression and it wasn't real good and pull the vavle covers and tthe valve guilds are intact and i used a screw driver and could push on them and they were still rubbery ..... so I am back to ring however like you said I will probably go with a 5.0 short block and use my heads. thanks for all the help
